Women Expanding Mental Health Conversations: Supporting Healing & Wellness

Conversations around mental health have grown significantly in recent years, becoming more open, accessible, and integrated into everyday life. Much of this progress is driven by women who are using their expertise, platforms, and voices to educate, advocate, and support individuals on their journey toward emotional wellness and recovery.

From clinical settings to community spaces and digital platforms, these leaders are helping reshape how mental health is understood — making it more relatable, inclusive, and approachable. Their work reflects a broader shift toward care that prioritizes connection, cultural awareness, and real-world application.

This Women’s History Month, Outreach is proud to highlight several women who are helping expand conversations around mental health and wellness in meaningful ways.

Dr. Alexandra Solomon, Ph.D. — Strengthening Relationships and Emotional Awareness

Dr. Alexandra Solomon is a clinical psychologist, professor, and author whose work focuses on relationships, emotional health, and self-awareness. Through her teaching, writing, and social media presence, she provides practical tools to help individuals build stronger, healthier connections with themselves and others.

Her approach emphasizes the importance of understanding emotional patterns, communication styles, and personal history as key components of mental wellness. By making these concepts accessible and actionable, Dr. Solomon empowers individuals to take an active role in their emotional growth.

Her work highlights a critical aspect of mental health: meaningful relationships and self-awareness are foundational to long-term well-being.

Dr. Afiya Mbilishaka, Ph.D. — Creating Community-Based Pathways to Healing

Dr. Afiya Mbilishaka is a psychologist, professor, and innovator who founded PsychoHairapy®, a model that integrates mental health support into culturally relevant community spaces such as hair salons.

Her work recognizes that healing does not always begin in traditional clinical environments. By meeting individuals where they feel comfortable and understood, Dr. Mbilishaka has helped expand access to mental health conversations and support in new and impactful ways.

Through this community-centered approach, she continues to break down barriers to care and promote mental wellness in spaces that are trusted and familiar.

Dr. Courtney Tracy, LCSW, Psy.D. — Making Mental Health Education Accessible

Dr. Courtney Tracy, also known as The Truth Doctor, is a licensed therapist who uses social media to provide direct, relatable, and educational content about mental health, trauma, and emotional regulation.

Her approach focuses on simplifying complex psychological concepts so they can be understood and applied in everyday life. By speaking openly about mental health topics, Dr. Tracy helps reduce stigma and encourages individuals to reflect on their own emotional experiences.

Her work demonstrates the power of accessibility — when mental health information is easy to understand, more people feel empowered to seek support and engage in their own healing process.

Why These Conversations Matter

The work of these leaders reflects an important evolution in mental health care. Today, conversations are no longer limited to clinical settings — they are happening in communities, online, and in everyday interactions.

This increased visibility plays a critical role in:

  • Reducing stigma around mental health and substance use

  • Encouraging early support and intervention

  • Making education and resources more accessible

  • Helping individuals feel seen, understood, and supported

When people have access to relatable information and trusted voices, they are more likely to take steps toward improving their mental health and well-being.
